| Analysis of translation

the main problem with the French here is "un
effet d'attraction", which is very abstract.
It is clear from the context that "a tempting
option" covers the intended meaning and will
be understood quickly by those who are relying
on a translation to understand the case. I am
not at all sure how I came up with "a tempting
option" because it would not be found in any
dictionary. I don't even know if such a phrase
can be found through logic; it seems to me
more likely that I found it intuitively.
Darbelnet and Vinay call translation "une
science et un art" and this is why. Scott
Moncrieff's translation of Marcel Proust is
still the best and a close reading of his
translation shows remarkable intuitive powers
at work.
