"alors" (underlined) refers back to the early
1980's in Quebec. It is an important little
word, but its importance in the French version
clearly emerges from context so there is no
need to draw attention to it. In translating
"alors" into English, "then" is too weak, so I
have chosen "at that time" and put it at the
beginning of the sentence.
